چکیده

One of the more convincing interpretations of mixed strategy equilibria describes a mixed equilibrium as a steady state in a large population in which all players use pure strategies but the population as a whole mimics a mixed strategy. To be complete, however, this interpretation requires a good story about how the population arrives at the appropriate distribution over pure strategies. In this paper I attempt to give an explanation based on an evolutionary, stochastic learning process. Convergence properties of these processes have been studied extensively but almost exclusively for the case of convergence to pure Nash equilibria. Here I study the conditions under which an evolutionary process converges to population mixed-strategy equilibria. I find that not all mixed equilibria can be justified as the result of the evolutionary learning process even if the equilibrium is unique. For symmetric 2x2 and 3x3 games I give necessary and sufficient conditions for convergence and for n×n games I give a sufficient condition. For cases in which the conditions are not satisfied counterexamples are given, in which the process enters a limit cycle. * I am indebted to Susan Elmes for numerous discussions and very helpful comments. ** Department of Economics, Columbia University, New York, NY 10027, USA. Evolutionary Stability of Pure-Strategy Equilibria in Finite Games

Sufficient conditions for pure-strategy Nash equilibria of finite games to be Ž . Lyapunov stable under a large class of evolutionary dynamics, the regular monotonic selection dynamics, are discussed. In particular, it is shown that in almost all finite extensive-form games, all the pure-strategy equilibria are stable. In such games, all mixed-strategy equilibria close to pure-strategy equilibr...

Instability of Mixed Nash Equilibria in Generalised Hawk-Dove Game: A Project Conflict Management Scenario

This paper generalises the Hawk-Dove evolutionary game by introducing cost sharing ratios for both players, and applies the generalised Hawk-Dove model to conflict management in projects through investigating the stability of Nash equilibria. A model with clashing interests between a project owner and a contractor is considered to derive their strategy adaptation given the cost sharing ratios. ...

Learning and Mixed-Strategy Equilibria in Evolutionary Games

This paper considers whether Maynard Smith's concept of an evolutionarily stable strategy, or "ESS", can be used to predict long-run strategy frequencies in large populations whose members are randomly paired to play a game, and who adjust their strategies over time according to sensible learning rules. The existing results linking the ESS to stable equilibrium population strategy frequencies w...

Evolutionary Equilibrium in Bayesian Routing Games: Specialization and Niche Formation

In this paper we consider Nash Equilibria for the selfish routing model proposed in [12], where a set of n users with tasks of different size try to access m parallel links with different speeds. In this model, a player can use a mixed strategy (where he uses different links with a positive probability); then he is indifferent between the different link choices. This means that the player may w...

Reinterpreting Mixed Strategy Equilibria: A Uni...cation of the Classical and Bayesian Views¤

We provide a new interpretation of mixed strategy equilibria that incorporates both von Neumann and Morgenstern’s classical concealment role of mixing as well as the more recent Bayesian view originating with Harsanyi. For any two-person game, G, we consider an incomplete information game, IG; in which each player’s type is the probability he assigns to the event that his mixed strategy in G is...
